The portrait painter leaves home, having parted with his once beloved wife. For a while he drives aimlessly around the northern regions, and then agrees to the tempting offer of his good friend Masahiko Amada – to live in a small house in the mountains. Moreover, this empty house belongs to Masahiko's father, a famous Japanese traditional artist. In the attic, a new tenant discovers a strange painting depicting a mysterious scene. It seems that the canvas literally exudes evil. Soon mystical events begin to occur in the life of the main character. One night he goes into the forest, following the faint tinkle of a bell…
